Le Sirenuse, Positano

Le Sirenuse is a gem lining the cliffs of Positano. Its rich red paint color makes it easily distinguishable by all who pass Positano’s shoreline. It is a fantastic 5-star luxury property that has been giving top service to its guests since 1951. The hotel has sort of become a household name and is often featured as a top hotel in Italy and the best place to stay in Positano. There was a moment when half of my “Italy Travel” Instagram feed consisted of posts featuring Le Sirenuse. I think I succumbed to overexposure and wanted to be a contrarian and stay somewhere that had more of a quiet luxury vibe.

Side note: Many of the hotels on the Amalfi Coast are dated and are in desperate need of renovation. They are often labeled as 4- and 5-star properties but rarely deliver on amenities, facilities, room décor, and service. There are, however, some luxury properties that exceed expectations and are frequented by more discreet guests.

The Treville

Perched just above Positano on a cliff, is the stunning Treville. This property houses 17 rooms spread amongst 4 amazing villas. Every room has sea views and is at least 400 square feet. It has a small plunge pool, however, many of the suites have private pools on their terraces. There is a spa and wellness center that overlooks the sea. Although it is not located in Positano but rather Upper Positano, they do provide all day shuttles to town. Positano attracts record crowds so being a bit away from the chaos is a huge plus. It is a great balance between being serene in nature yet having close access to a town and its amenities. It is a sanctuary tucked away, and its vibe is tranquil.

The hotel’s private farm caters to the slow food movement and provides the restaurant, Maestro, with fresh ingredients. Overlooking Positano and the bay, Maestro produces exquisite cuisine complimented by sunset views.

The hotel has a beach club called On the Rocks. Literally perched on top of rocks touching the sea. Here, you can enjoy cocktails and daytime snacks curated by Maestro’s kitchen. From here you can take a short boat shuttle into Positano.

The Treville is no stranger to old Hollywood, it has hosted the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Maria Callas, and the great Coco Chanel.

This is a fantastic property for couples or families with teenagers. There is no kids’ club offered nor is there a shallow beach or large swimming pool. The restaurant’s views make it popular amongst non-hotel guests so advanced reservations are recommended.

Prices run from $800 and up during the summer season. The hotel opens from the end of March until the first week of November.

Il San Pietro Positano

Il San Pietro is a dream. It is probably one of the most fabulous properties in Italy and its 3 Michelin Keys were well-earned. It is of the Relais & Chateaux brand so service is top notch. This property has been catering to the famous for decades. Discreet luxury is what they do best and perhaps this is why they have attracted so many notable celebrities like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Tina Turner, Barbara Streisand, etc.

The hotel is family run, and their personal touches are evident throughout the property. There are 57 luxury rooms. Even their most basic rooms are large, beautifully decorated, and have private terraces overlooking the sea.

Il San Pietro is the only hotel located in Positano with direct access to a private beach. It is accessible via elevator from the hotel further providing exclusivity to their hotel guests.

There is a luxury freshwater pool overlooking the sea and the village of Praiano. Each room’s amenities kit comes with a beach tote bag and flip flops. Their attention to detail is consistent throughout your stay.

The tennis court is probably the most beautiful private court in the world. Tucked away in the cliffside but at the ocean’s edge, it gives the impression of playing on the beach. The tennis court is exclusively available to hotel guests.

Although the hotel is close to town, they still provide 24/7 free shuttle service to Positano’s city center that only takes about 5 minutes each way.

As a gift to every guest who stays at Il San Pietro, they offer a 2-hour boat cruise along the coast departing every morning. Cocktails and snacks are provided, and I cannot think of a more wonderful way to spend a free morning than swimming in the sea. If you crave a full day out on the water with an itinerary like beach club hopping or visiting Capri, they also have private boat charters available through the hotel concierge.

If you are looking for fine dining, then look no further than Zass. The hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant overlooks the sea and utilizes fresh ingredients from their private gardens. The restaurant’s cellar is one of the best and I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate a special event.

This hotel does not allow cell phones in their restaurants, and it is a drone free zone providing complete privacy and discretion to hotel guests.

The room rates start at 1500 Euros and the hotel is open from April until October.
